The start of this Lenten Series is Repent & Renewal
Scripture
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:13 WEB
Devotional Reading
This verse talks about the ultimate expression of love, which is sacrificial love—Jesus offering His life for the salvation of humanity. During Lent, we focus on Jesus’ journey to the cross, where He would embody this sacrificial love most profoundly, giving His life for us.
As we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice, we’re challenged to consider what living in response to His great love means. This love isn’t just a gift to ponder—it’s a call to live boldly, knowing Easter’s victory is ours. Jesus calls His followers to love others selflessly, just as He loved us. Lent is an invitation to grow in love, not only by contemplating Jesus’ sacrifice but by finding ways to lay down our own comfort, pride, or selfishness for the sake of others.
Reflection Questions
What does it mean to “lay down ones life”? Is it always about physical death, or can it involve other forms of sacrifice? How does this concept of sacrifice relate to the Lenten practices of self-denial?
Lent is a time for increased service. How does Jesus’ example of laying down His life inspire us to serve others more sacrificially during this season?
How can meditating on this verse transform our understanding of love and sacrifice not only during Lent, but all through our lives? How an it motivate us to live more loving, sacrificial lives, reflecting the love of Christ to the world?
